Introduction |
Research is one of the four cornerstones of the philosophy and programs of the Canadian College of Osteopathy. Research is one of the most important features of an academic environment, as is the production and dissemination of new knowledge and the application of that knowledge to human welfare. At the Canadian College of Osteopathy (CCO), the student is given the opportunity to meet this most important aspect of the academic experience through the thesis research requirement. Not only does this requirement give the student an opportunity to experience the highest academic accomplishment, but also prepares the student to expand his or her professional experience by becoming a true scholar in the area of osteopathic research. The thesis research is carried out with the help of experienced researchers associated with the college and mentors experienced in research and practice. The research may be either experimental or integrative and allows students to examine the literature in their proposed area of interest. The finished project is presented first to experienced readers, and upon acceptance, to the International Jury prior to receiving final approval. Upon approval, students have the assurance that they have produced a product worthy of true academic acclaim. The results can then be published in a variety of journals. The research enterprise required of the CCO student is both an intensive and rewarding experience. In Ontario this research element sets the CCO and its graduates apart from schools that offer osteopathic training. This requirement puts the CCO in the forefront of osteopathic educational institutions in the world. Research at the Canadian College of Osteopathy is directed and overseen by Dr. Michael M. Patterson of the United States. |
